FLOODS IN WAIRARAPA.

Per Pres® Association.. Mastseton, May 1, One of the heaviest floods ever known is being experienced here. Rain commenced to fall on Tuesday night and continued steadily ever since. The rivors are all overflowing and it is feared that a lot of damage has been done and stock drowned. In Mastcrton portions of the main streets are covered with a foot of water and several shopjp are flooded out and stock damaged. The low lying country is all under water and some roads are impassable through flood water. The Tenui correspondent of the Wairarapa Age telegraphs that the floods in the Tenui district are the highest ever known. The water had reached Mr Johnston’s store and was expected to reach a higher point by 7 o’clock to-night when the tide is full and backs the river up. Tho situation is very serious. Settlers are busily engaged removing all stock to higher levels. Slips aud washouts are frequent along the road between Whakataki and Tenui. The mail coach had to return to Carswell’s and tho mails were brought to Masterton on horseback. May 2. The rainfall to 9 a.m. foi 2-1 hours is 2.85 inches. It is still raining.
