SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY.
Per Press Association. Qamabtj, April 30. At a meeting of tho Employers' Association to-night it was decided to emphatically protest against the action of the Labour Department in withdrawing the permission to close factories on the same df>.y as the local half-holiday for shops and substituting Saturday instead. The resolution is to be forwarded to the Minister for Labour. Timaeu, April 80. Considerable uneasiness has been caused here by the distribution of a circular from the Labour Department, demanding compliance with the Factories Act, 1901, requiring women and boys under 18, employed in factories, to bp given the weekly half : ho}iday on Saturday. Hitherto they have bpen given Thursday, the same afternoon as shops and drapers wlio employ tailoresses, dressmakers and; milliners, and their < country customers will be greatly incon- j venienced as Saturday is recognised as market day by the country people. Tho subject was brought up at the annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce this evening and a resolution was passed requesting tho Minister of Labour toallow t the Act to remain suspended as heretofore till Parliament meets, and a deputation was appointed to wait on Hon. "W.Hall-Jones on his visit this week.
