TRADE WITH CANADA.
Press Association—Copyright. Sydsty, April 23.
In connection with the. recent cable stating that the" Canadian-Pacific Eailway had decided to place two of its Orient service vessels on the Australian line, Mr Gibbons, representing the Canadian Pressman, who has arrived in Sydney, confirms this information. Kef erring to the development of Canadian-Australian trade, Mr Gibbons says much interest is evidenced throughout Western Canada in the present steamship situation, the withdrawal o£ the Oceanic Company's fleet being looked pon as creating an opportunity which it would be suicidal for British lines to neglect. By combination of mail subsidies and general j j traffic hitherto divided between rival lines, there should be no difficulty in profitably maintaining a direct- Cana-dian-Australian l'inc, calling at Auckland. And by utilising the most modern steamship afloat with such vessels traffic will be stimulated. 'The time required for interchange of British mails will be appreciably reduced. The general expectation through-' out British Columbia had been that the Canadian Pacific would with the lapsing of the present mail subsidy, seek to enter the trade on its own account, probably" by. transfer oE the Empress fleet. Whether this course of actio.! will be pursued or the service continue in the hands of an Australasian company operating in conoert
with the Canadian Pacific .is, Mr Gibbons thinks, immaterial to the main issue which is that the time is ripe for substitution of larger, faster,' and mora modern vessels with which the trade will speedily considerably expand.
