KIWITEA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting was held on Saturday. Present—Crs. Carman (chairman), Hockley, Guthrie, Morton, Fowler, Bruce, Mclntyre, M. Neal and Short. The inward correspondence was dealt with as follows From W. and F. Neal, asking permission to foil matai trees on Lagoon and Kelpie road |for firewood.—Gr. Guthrie to arrange with applicants. From O. Pussell, for permission to erect gate on Williamson road.—Refused. From Frank Haggitt, for F. Kensington, stating the latter wished to add to building on reserve and desired right extended to remove such additions with main building when necessary.—Granted. From F. Gillett, with account for surveying and planning Ooulert’s road amounting to £23 2s. —Held over. . From Department of Lands, asking for what 'purpose the Council desired to reserve section 80, block 5, Apiti. —Wanted for grazing purposes. From J. McOoll and Co., giving an order iu favour of R. U. Harden for all monies due to them.—Accepted. From Gorriuge Bros., stating they expected contractors to make good any damage they may cause while carting metal from their property; requesting permission to take metal from road Jfside and to have culvert placed across the road near [their gate.—Granted. From H. K. Hodge, enclosing letter from A. J. Greaves, pointing out that contractors for contract 30 had injured fence reserve—£l os to be field back from money due to contractors. • From • Treasury, notifying that 1 £3OO was available for metalling roads iu Saudou Block From Department of Roads, stat- 1 iug that authority to expend £2O 10s on Kiwitoa middle road Jiad been | cancelled. An estimate was given of the cost of road maintenance iu the several ridings for the year just commencing, as follows by Or. Hockley, chairman of Financial Committee; —Cheltenham Riding £346 7s Id, Kiwitoa £422 10s, Waitnna £398, Kimboltou £491 os od, Ougo £460 15s 10(1, Peep-o-’Day £605 12s (id, Raugiwahia £505 15s, Pakihiknra £603 2s 6d, Hautapu £IO6B 4s 3d; total £4901 12s 6d.

The following statement of the cost of xicr mile of the several roads, prepared by the chairman was read :—Cheltenham, 15% miles of road, per mile £2l 13s lid; Kiwitea, 12%, £32 6s Id; Ougo, 20%, £2l 18s 4d; ’’Waitnna, 26%, £l4 14s 0d ; Kimboltou, 29%, £l6 17s 6d; Peep-o-Day, 29%, £2O~ 3s 9d ; Pakihiknra, 40%, £l4 14s 2d; Raugiwahia, 58, £9 7s 4d; Hautapu, 95%, £ll 2s 3d. Or. Hockley said the above figures indicated the large amount required to maintain the Kimboltou road.

The Treasurer reported that be had received £I3BO 17s 8d since last meeting. The general account was £963 17s Id iu credit aud the amount to be passed for payment was £3458 los Id.

In the absence of the Engineer, owing to illness, a report was received from the overseer, Mr W. J. Wood, concerning the progress of the different contracts iu hand. All wore reported as satisfactory except that of No. 37, the contractor for which had carted a lot of rubbish on the road aud the work would not be passed until good metal was spread . The same contractor would be charged royalty on all gravel be had carted from the Council pit for private persons. The roads were in fairly good condition. OTHER BUSINESS.

It was resolved — That the contractor Mr Jensen be charged the usual royalty for metal taken from county pit aud supplied to private people, aud iu future any contractor removing any metal from county pit without permission from County Engineer will be liable to prosecution. That the Engineer be instructed to measure the quantity of metal taken from the Domain reserve on the Forest road. That the recommendations re motor car traffic bo referred to Works Committee.

That, Ors. Hockley—Guthrie, Council is prepared to give the necessary guarantee asked for by the Postal Department to enable a telephone line to be erected between Huuterville aud Saudou Block, provided that the Huuterville Town Board will recoup half the amount to this Council.

Iu putting the motion to strike a general rate of 01-G4ths d.in the £ the chairman said that by striking a rate of Jfd there would be a deficiency of about £2OO but he hoped the Council would be able to lower the rate next year. The motion was adopted. The chairman called attention to the approaching conference of local bodies and the necessity of the Council considering the Counties Act so that it might ’ instruct its delegate. It was decided to hold a special meeting on the 17th May. That the Engineer he instructed to spend W. Shaw’s accrued thirds on track leading to section 23, block 11, Hautapu. That payment bo made' to Mr Gibson and Mr Perry for laud taken for deviation of Coulter’s line. That W. Aldersou’s tender for contract 48, aud that of H. F. Greaves for contract 58 bo accepted, subject to approval of Engineer. • That the chairman’s action iu accepting Messrs Shapleski’s tender for metalling 70 chains on Rangitikei road cast at 3s per yard, also Richardson’s for 50 yards on Kimboltou riding, be continued. That Mr H. K. Hodge he given permission to take metal from Branch road pit at the usual royalty. That thirty days notice haviug expired the clerk he instructed to take the necessary steps to enforce the registration of unregistered dogs in the county.
