FLAGSHIP QUARANTINED.
{Per Press Association.) Lyttelton, April 21
A suspicious case of illness has occurred on board H.M.S. Powerful, the flagship of the Australian Squadron, which is lying at anchor in the stream off Camp Bay, Lyttelton. William Bridgen, canteen manager, arrived from Sydney by the Maheno and came to Lyttelton on Thursday by the Mararoa. Ho complained of being unwell, and was placed on the sick list. Yesterday Dr Uplram, Port Health Officer, went on board (the Powerful and examined Bridgen, and found his symptoms suspicious. Dr, Lpham states they may indicate plague, but again may be only influenza. He at once quarantined the Powerful. All leave has been stopped, and visitors are not allowed on board.
Dr. Upham at once communicated with Dr. Finch, District Health Officer, who was to visit the Powerful this afternoon to examine the patient. A conference had been held between Lyttelton Harbor Board and Captain Halsey, of the Powerful, with reference to bringing the vessel alongside the wharf during the remainder of her stay m port. It is understood this was to have been done, but in view of Bridgen’s oaso the Powerful is now quarantined and will have to remain m the stream.
Dr. Finch states that though he cannot say the case is not plague, the patient is bettor, and will be kept isolated on board the vessel, which Will remain in quarantine.
