At the inquest on the body of Mr E. M. Smith, M.H.8., on Saturday, a verdict of accidental death was returned, the jury expressing sympathy with the bereaved wife and family. A fire occurred at 4 o'clock yesterdaymorning m the premises of H. Crow-ley, tailor. Canterbury-street, Lyttelton. The building, which was old, was gutted. Government has ordered a military funeral for the late E. M. Smith, M.H.R., who served in the Imperial and Colonial troops as armourer. Cabinet will bo represented at the funeral by the ActingPremier and Hon. J. Carroll, and the Hon. B. MoNab will also bo present. The funeral takes place this afternoon.

Tho Dunedin Star states that in Wakaia a short time ago a hotel was sold for £I7OO, and in three or four months’ time again exchanged ownership at an advance of £7OO. In the neighbouring district of Wakaka a hotel changed hands not h ng since at a substantial figure, and after the lapse of a few weeks was repurchased by the original owner at £OOO over and above tho amount he obtained for it.

At Wakapuaka the cable work was delayed last .night by an eletrlo storm. Pogwell has challenged Arhst to row early in July for £IOO or £2OO aside, and has put up a deposit. Pope, sen., of Feilding. which took place yesterday afternoon. He bad been ailing for a considerable time, and ib© end was not altogether unexpected. Ho was an old and highly respected resident of Pending, and one who was always willing to extend the hand of friendship to all who required assistance. At the request of a number of ratepayers Mr R. K. Simpspu has consented to be nominated as Councillor for Porewa Riding of Rangitikei County Council, the seat vacated by Mr B. E. Beckett. Mr R. K. Simpson’s long service on the local bodies of the district is sufficient guarantee of his knowledge ;of local affairs and of his capacity to safe- | guard the interests of ratepayers. We regret to have to record the sudden death of Mr J. W. Patterson which occurred at his late residence, near Leedstown, Marton, at an early hour this morning. Mr Patterson was well known in the Turakinadistrict where he lived for many years. He lately purchased the farm and homestead from Mr G. Polgreen. The late Mr Patterson, who was 37 years of age, leaves a widow and a family of young children. Deceased was a son of the Rev. J. Patterson, Wellington. A case was considered in the Appeal Court to-day as to the amoui.it of income tax paayble iu the colony hy Messrs Borthwick and Sous, or i Loudon. Owing to the rapid spread of rabbits in tbo Kiwitea County, the Council has now decided to take action to try tp prevent their increase, and will obtain a supply of poison for the settlers and try to arrange for its use at dates fixed upon. Cr. AlcNeal urged that this step should bo taken, and he was strongly supported by the Chairman, who pointed out that the duty of a County Council was broader than the mere interpretation of the Counties Act would indicate. The Kiwitea County Council on Saturday granted Cr. Short, who leaves on Tuesday on a trip to England, six months leave of absence. The Chairman speaking on behalf of the .Council [isaid lie was quite sure the ratepayers in Cr. Short’s riding would readily grant the leave of absence, if it had been necessary to refer the decision of the matter to them. But the interest of the riding would not suffer in any way, for he and Cr. Hockley would make a special effort to seo that everything was attended to as well as if Cr. Short were present. They hoped that be and Airs Short would derive the utmost pleasure from the trip, and ho could bo sure on his return of receiving a hearty welcome from the Kiwitea County Council.

On Saturday, at Dunedin, Air Widdowson, S.AI.', gave judgment in the case of Dunedin City Corporation v. Napier. Complainants applied to have a stable in Hope-street pulled down as being insanitary. A certificate of the Health Officerbad been given certifying the building to bo dangerous to the public health Air Widdowson finds that the stable, though old and perhaps not so up-to-date as the authorities require, seem 3 to be in a remarkably good state of preservation and in fairly good order and condition. He is of opinion that it was not proved to bo decayed or dilapitated. and that he would not be justified in making an order to pull it down. Judgment was for defendant with costs (JEC 6s), each party to pay its own expenses.
