Makowhai Hoodlums.
Slß,—Will you allow me a few lines in your valuable columns criticising the little township df Makowliai or rather the hoodlums that live in it. We have a hall built by Mr Darragli, at his own expense, in which he holds small meetings, also teaches Sunday School, all for the good of the young—that same hall lie has gratuitously given to be used as-a public school. So, I think, after all his kindness and thoughtfulness, lie should get a little respect shown him when he comes to address those who care to hear him, but a gang, of hoodlums collect round the door trying to drown the voice of the preacher by their own foul language and smoking cigarettes. Last Sunday night they carried away the steps from the door, which means about two feet of a fall, aud if its absence had not been noticed by a certain gentleman, it might have been the cause of a broken face or limb. It is time these things were put a stop to. Considering the place is so small, it is nothing to bo proud of, but “where ignorance is bliss ’tis folly to be wise.” If they do not like Mr Darragli’s preaching let them stay away. It is only- a cowardly action, anyway, poking abont in the dark, but all cowards love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil.—l am, etc., “PROOF.” Makowhai, 11th April, 1907.
