COMMERCIAL.
Grain Report Messrs Todd and Douglas, Dunedin, report under date April 8 : Oats.—Since last reporting the Easter holidays have interfered with business to some extent, and tno fact that most people are busy balancing has also had a quieting effect. The market is easy, and there is not a great deal of demand. It is .difficult to know what the course of the market will be. Merchants have been trying to induce farmers to accept lower prices, but for the most part the latter prefer to hold until later on. A number of inquiries are being received from the country for oats to be used by farmers who are short of feed. iToday’s prices aro as follows —Gartons and Sparrowbills 2s 73-td to 2s Bd, B grade Gartous and Sparrowbills 3s 7d to 3s Duns 2s lid to 3s 11 ltd, with a good inquiry, long tartars 3s lOd to 3s lid. All prices f.o.b.s.i. Milling Wheat.—Market remains firm and millers are picking up anything available at current prices. We (quote Velvet and Tuscan 3s 5d to 3s Bd, Hunter's Bs 5d to 8s 7d, f.o. b.s.i.
Fowl Wheat.—Scarce, with a good inquiry. Good whole quality 3s 4d f.o.b.s.i.
p eas .—Practically all the new crop is now in second hands, and 'the market remains firm. Wo quote: Blue Prussias os to _ss 3d f.0.b.5.i., Partridge 4s 9d to ss. Barley.—Feed quality 3s 9d to 3s 3d f.o.b.s.i.
Bran.—No change ■ to report, Price 80s net f.o.b. Pollard.—loos net f.o.b.
Stinseed.—A good inquiry, with only a small quantity offering from the couuttry. We quote first grade £l4, medium £l3 5s to £l3 10s f.o.b. .s.i.
Ryegass.—Market quiet, althougli South Island houses are now buying part of tlieir requirements for Spring trade. Prices remain without change, namely, 341 b seed 6s 2d to (is sd, 28-SBlb 5s 9d to 6s, 20-281 bos 4d to os Bd. Imported seed, 28-301 b 4s 6d on 4s 9d, 26-371 b 4s 2d to 4s sd, 23-251 b 4s to 4s 3d, all f.0.b., sacks extra. Italian.—The strong demand continues. There will probably be a shortage of colonial seed when the South Island spring demand comes round. We quote: Well marked machine dressed seed 5s 3d to 5s 6d, medium 4s 8d to 5s Id, imported, very line quality, 4s 6d f.0.b., sacks extra.
Cocksfoot.—Market remains firm. Merchants have now bought practically the whole of the crop. We quote; Machine dressed 171 b seed sJ£d to 53£d, I6lb seed to 5Wd ; fairly clean undressed seed 13-141 b 4J£d to 4%d, rough seed for surface sowing! in strong demand at 2%d to 4d per lb, f.0.b., sacks extra. Vv Glovers.—Owing to the anticipated shortage in the colonial crop the market is firm, and merchants are beeping a sharp look out for anything offering. We quote : Imported white 65s to 755, extra'choice 80s, lower grades 45s to 625, colonial white host quality 100 s, medium grades 75s to 87s 6d. Cowgrass.—No new crop available yet. We quote last season’s as follows : Choice colonial 83s to 86s, medium 75s to 83s, imported 66s Jto 72s 6d. Timothy, imported, 355, colonial 80s to 455. Crested dogtail, imported 95s to 100 s, colonial 100 sto 120 s. Suckling, 15s to 30s. Clover seed for surface sowing 3d to 4d per lb. Samples on application.
Messrs Kaye and Carter report:— Wheat: Milling Tuscan and Pearl 3s 5d to 3s milling Hunter's 3s 4}4(l to 3s 5d,~ fowl wheat -3s 3d to 3s 3sld, f.0.b.5.0., Lyttelton. Milling Wheat has advanced and is very firm,

The New Zealand Loan and Mercauitle Agency Company, Ltd., report that at their sale at Palmerston North on Thursday they had an average entry of sheep and cattle. There was a good attendance of buyers and a good sale resulted, practically all lines being sold at full values. Quotations. —Sheep: Cull lambs 3s 2d to 7s, store ewes 10s to 11s, f.m. ewes 13s' Id to 13s 6d, fat ewes 14s 2d rams 17s to 3gs. Cattle: Weaners, culls, ss, good 14s to 17s 6d; yearling heifers 335, 2-year-old heifres 81s, forward heifers £3 18s, yearling steers, good, 39s to £3 9s, store cows 26s to 345, forward cows £3 Is to £2 15s, fat heifers £4 Is, tat cows £4 15s, steers £4 Is. Cattle: 3 year steers 30s 6d, %% to 3 year steers £8 18s, fat cows £3 ss, 15 months steers 80s 6d, Kimboltou: The yarding ot shoop and cattle was a fair one, and a total clearance was effected. Sheep : Mixed ages ewes 11s, mixed lambs 8s to 10s. Cattle *. 18 mouths steers £3 4s, 18 mouths, heifers £1 to 80s, 3 and 4 year steers £4 14s, 3 year steers 58s store cows 86s, fat cows £4, 15 mouths heifers 335. Feildiug: An average entry of sheep and cattle came forward. Sheep of all classes were in good demand, lambs selling particularly well.- Buyers for cattle were present, and there was keen competition for young steers and fat and forward cows. Sheep ; Lambs Js 2d to 10s lOd, cull ewes 6s 9d to 10s 7d, forwardjewes 125., f.f.m. ewes 15s 3d to 15s 6d.
