From Our Own Correspondent. Mr and Mrs Hans Morteusen, who recently sold out their property to Mr Sutherland jun., have left tho district ou a lengthy holiday tour of the colonies. Prior to their departure they were farewelled by their fellow settlers, the function taking place at Ridgelauds, the residence of Mr F. G. Nicholas, J.P. Mr Win. Reid, who presided, in proposing the toast of ‘ ‘ Our Guests, ’ ’ spoke in most'felicitous terms, special mention being made of the good work done by Mr Morteusen ou the County Council and school committee. Mr Mortcuseu has also been chairman of the Makiuo branch of the Liberal Federation ever since its formation. Messrs O, O. Pleasants, Koherstein and Nicholas, who had been associated with Mr Morteusen ou public bodies also paid their need of praise as to his ability in the various offices he has held. In replying to the toast of the ‘ ‘ Dairying Industry ’ ’ Mr Duusford, manager for Nathan and Co.’s Defiance Factory, explained to the suppliers present what his firm was prepared to do for them in the event of the suppliers wishing to go in for cheese in lieu of butter. Ho quoted a mass of figures on the subject aud no doubt the valuable information to suppliers in assisting them as to which it shall bo next season, butter or cheese. This is a very interesting subject just now ou account of the splendid returns being received by New Zealand ehoesemiakers;

During the evening the ■ Chairman handed to Mr Morteusen a very handsome Gladstone bag fitted throughout in a first-class manner, bearing the following inscription on a silver plate “Presented to Mr and Mrs Hans Morteusen by their Makino friends, 30-3-07.” Accompanying tho bag was a very good travelling rug. During the evening songs and recitations were rendered by Messrs Pleasants, Baker, Eeid, Caff Bros, and others.

Mr John Henson and family have also left the disti’iet, their destination being Mangaonoho where Mr Henson will fill a similar position in Mr McGregor’s sawmills to that he held here under Mr Bell of Strathspey
