LORD CROMER.
Press Association.—Copyright,
London, April 12,
Lord Cromer’s resignation, especially because it is owing to failing health, is keenly regretted on every side.
Sir Eldon Gorst’s appointment, as recommended by Lord Cromer, will meet with the fullest approbation of British circles in Egypt. The newspapers unanimously express gratitude for, and admiration of. Lord Cjomer’s services, and sincerely regret his retirement.
Lord Cromer’s letter of resignation 'emphasized that no political considerations of any kind whatever wore associated therewith. Nothing could bo more effective or generous than the manner in which the Government had supported him. Sir E. Grey and Mr Balfour eulogised Sir Eldon Gorst, and said everybody knew how anxious he was to carry out intact Lord Cromer’s- marvellous policy and wished him success.
The Times says that Sir Eldon Gorst goes to Eypt with infinitely fairer prospects than those of Lord Cromer in 1883.
