A PAINFUL CASE.
Death from Delirium Tremens; For Press Association. Auckland, April 11. 1 Tho Fiji Times, of March SO, comments on the fact that a passenger from New 'Zealand per the Monra was removed to a lunatic asylum instead of a hospital when he required medical aid. It says tlw man referred to was suffering from delirium tremens, possibly caused by tho stoppage of liquor on tiro voyage. The Union Company notified the local police authorities that the man was temporarily depressed in mind, and they wished him removed. The police endeavoured to have him taken into the Colonial Hospital for treatment, ,but the chief medical officer refused admission to the unfortunate man, and ho was taken to tho lunatic asylum. Ho was removed to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon and died a few hours after. At tho request of fellow passengers Dr. Fox, who was called to examine the patient when on tho steamer, issued a certificate that the man had no right to be taken to tho asylum, but urgently required medical aid. The deceased was about 40 years of age, i.ud leaves a wife in Christchurch. Ho was described as one of the cleverest veterinary surgeons in New Zealand.
