A J.P.’S DEFENCE.
Per Press Association. Napier, April 10
In a case in which a JusUoc*oE the Peace was charged at the Magistrate’s Court today with perjury, the accused made the somewhat unusual defence that the evidence which formed the subject of the charge referred to a time when he was intoxicated, and that his evidence had not been knowingly false.
The Magistrate, in dismissing the case, said he thought, however, that it was an extraordinary thing that a person who had to get out of a serious ofisneo like this by the defence that he was drunk and did not know what ho was doing, should hold a commission of the peace, and ho would have to consider seriously whether to make representations to the Department about the matter.
