Rangitikei Advocate. FRIDAY, APRIL, 5, 1907. SECOND EDITION. EDITORIAL NOTES

THE deputation of working men who recently visited Germany to study the" industrial conditions existing there must evidently have been well shepherded. Their report, of which some details were cabled on Thursday, is evidently intended to support the views of the advocates cf a protective tariff for Britain. ViTo cannot but smile at the naive statement that the use of black bread, which lis made from' rye, is a- matter of i taste rather than of poverty. No doubt there arc people in the world who prefer bread that always has a sour taste, but wo fancy .that the Germau workman who was offered white bread for his use instead of black would not be slow in making a choice between them. It is of some importance also that bread made from wheat is more nutritious than rye bread. MeaJ;, adds the report, is temporarily at- a high price owing to the protect.. tariff maintained in favour of agvicu prists, and horse flesh is eaten by a small minority, it would be interesting to hear the remarks of the members of the deputation if on their return home they were provided with a diet of black bread aud horse flesh and were required to '.work the same hours as Germau workmen.

I WITH the object of providing shooting men with a bettor record of matches we propose in future to publish a shooting column oucc a week instead of inserting -the reports of matcher, jnst as they come to hand The varying demands on our space make it impossible, to guarantee the appearance of the shooting news on a fixed day of the week, but we shall endeavour to publish it on Friday. With this end in view we shall be glad if secretaries of rifle clubs will kindly forward match scores f:o as to reach us not later than Thursday in order to leave as long a time for setting as possible. Rifle shooting is not a more recreation, but an absolute necessity of our existence as a nation. It lias, perhaps, hitherto hardly attained the high place in popular estimation which it deserves, but our readers may rest assured that we shall use every effort to encourage such a worthy object.
