FEILDING BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The on 1 ; lary monthly meeting was held last night, the Mayor, Mr J. Trewin, in the chair. A letter was received from the Fire Brigade, stating that Mr G. H. Saywell had been elected captain, subject to the approval of the Council.—Approval given. Messrs Bell and Co. wrote, asking

for a reduction in the charge for water to Is per 1000 gallons, as supplied to brewers.—Reduction given. Eight stable-keepers, brewery companies, and cordial manufacturers, wrote saying it was unfair to charge them for water by meter.—Referred to Water Committee, the Council being apparently in favour of some arrangement more agreeable to the applicants. The Engineer reported, among other things, that the term for the completion of the Kimbolton road contract lapsed on March 26th. —A committee was sot up to consider what steps should bo taken in the matter.

Three tenders received for ' kerbing and channelling work ; but j one embodied a declaration according to section 187 of the 6th schedule fof the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, as to tho rate of wages to be paid and hours of labour to be worked; the other two were declared informal, one of which was the lowest. But it was resolved "That Messrs Pulling and Lord bo requested to send in a tender in proper form, ml it will bo accepted. " Some time ago negotiations were in progress for vesting the property of tho Fire Brigade in the Council, but an agreement could not be arrived at. The Mayor, commenting on the matter, advocated seizing the plant, disbanding tho brigade, and calling for volunteers to form anotlier brigade. '? Crs. Fitzherbert and Harford contended that the negotiations had fallen through owing to tho want of tact on the part of the Council.

It was resolved that Crs. West, Richmond and Burno form a committee to arrange for the vesting of the Fire Brigade property. At the request of Cr. Fitzherbert the conditions of contract for the work now proceeding on the Kimbolton road were laid on the table, and it was found that they did not bear tho Council's seal. Cr. Fitzherbert made a proposition on pi& matter, but the Mayor refused to receive it, and declared, tho meeting terminated,
