LOSS OF A STEAMER.
Per Press Association.. Auckland, April 2. The small steamer Te Aroha, bound from Auckland to AVaikato, foundered off AVhangaroi Heads on Tuesday night. The master and crow saved their ejects and landed at Maraden Point. April 3. The Te Aroha was a small wooden steamer, 61 tons register, and was purchased recently from Devonport Ferry Company by parties in the AVaikato to tow coal barges down the river. She left Auckland on Sunday last in charge of Capt. Minchin, and everything went well until Monday afternoon, when a heavy sea was encountered. The steamer began to make a great deal of water and when Bream Hoad was reached she was straining considerably. The mastertried to work her into the beach at Peach Covo but the water gained so rapidly that tho attempt was abandoned. The crew, numbering seven, took to tho boat and landed at the Cove. They took some of their effects with them and, after landing them, went back to the steamer again and, tho weather being fine, secured tho balance of their personal property. Tho Te Aroha then had over 7ft. of water in tho hold and sho suddenly disappeared. Capt. Minohin and crew were picked up at the Covo and a coastal steamer landed them at Auckland last night.
