Owing to a temporary superabundance of native labour on tho Band, three thousand men are unable to oil tain employment, and tbore are many others waiting to offer tlioir services to tho mines.
It is supposed that tho natives have exhausted the largo amounts of money which they earned during 1 the Boer war. Tho president of the Chamber of Mines declares that tlio situation, which is abnormal, will not continue.
A. mass meeting of Indian coolies, held at Johannesburg, protested against the Asiatic Law Amendment Ordinance, which was re-enaoted on tho 21st inst. by the Transvaal Parliament. The mooting considered tho ordinance unnecessary and degrading, and it was resolved to make an offer to submit to voluntary registration if tho offensive requirement embodied in the now law was not insisted upon. If this compromise is refused, the Indians of tho Transvaal intend to appeal for Imperial protection.
