In order to reach the entombed miner divers had to make their way from the 900 feet level through tho water down a ladderway to the 1000 feet level, then proceed 800 feet along the level, 30 feet up a rise at the top of which Varischetti was imprisoned, the compressed air acting as in a diving bell and keeping him from drowning. Hughes, a miner, used to diving, volunteered to assist the regular divers brought to do the work. Hughes, at the third attempt, succeeded in reaching the imprisoned man after a hard struggle as tho rise was almost blocked with mud. Varischetti was intensely surprised when the diver emerged from tho water and supplied him with food. Au attempt will be made to get him out iu diving dress,
