ALLEGED CRUELTY TO A CHILD

Per Press Association. ■Wellington, March 21. At Greytown yesterday Charles and Emily Higginson were committed for trial on.a charge of the manslaughter of an infant alleged to have died from neglect. Bail £SO and two sureties of £SO each was allowed. Evidence was given that the mother though able to do so refused to suckle the child, whose death according to medical testimony was due to neglect and starvation. The husband was charged with the mother of the infant under Sections 148 and 149 of the Criminal Code, enacting that the head of the family who fails to provide necessaries of life for a person in his charge under the age of 16 is criminally responsible if death supervenes.
