SPORTING.

Horowhenua Meeting. Unfortunately for this popular Club’s annual fixture the elements were against them. The rain, which had set in on the previous evening, continued throughout the day, resulting in a very .small attendance. As the day advanced the rain increased, necessitating patrons remaining under cover all the time. The grounds out up badly, likewise tho course, making the running very heavy. It was - only natural to expect small fields, but, despite this disadvantage, the races were well fought out. The officials under such adverse circumstances did all they could to get the races despatched promptly to time. Had the weather not been so disastrous there is no doubt that the investments would have stood in equality with the previous year, For to-day the Club has been successful with a substantial guarantee to secure the presence of the Besses of th’ Barn band, and; if only the weather permits, it is estimated that there will be a record attendance. The totalisator figures were £1832, against £4646 for the corresponding day last year.
