ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Per Press Association. Thames, March 18. Elja Lopsich, an Austrian, aged 27, was killed by a falling tree at Wharekawa, near Thames, yesterday. Some of deceased’s relatives were engaged in falling a large tree, which unexpectedly crashed down, carrying another tree which struck Lopsioh on the head. Lepsieh was removed unconscious, and died shortly after. His companions carried him through the bush over tough tracks to the Thames, a long weary journey, arriving here after many hours’ tramping. The fatality was purely accidental. A sad circumstance in connection with the suicide of Thomas Mitchell, details of which were telegraphed the other day, is that the shook proved too much for his brother, who now lies in ihc hospital in a critical mental condition. The brothers were much attached, and the survivor feit his loss keenly. Westport, March 18. A double fatality occurred at Coalhrockdale on Saturday night, Mrs Freyer and a two year old child boing drowned in the Waimangaroa Paver. At the inquest to-day the evidence failed to disclose how deceased came to got into the riveiv but it was surmised that the mother with the child in her arms had fallen over the embankment of the river about 8 o'clock on Saturday night and been drowned. Mr and Mrs Trover and child only recently arrived from the Old Country. Wellington, March 19. A middle-aged man named Henry Stnuuol attempted to commit suicide on Sunday by taking chlorodyuc. He admitted the offbuce at the Police Court to-day and was remanded for a week.
