Notes by “Turf.”

P. D, Jones has replaced D. Price as first horseman to Hon. J. H. Ormond’s stable.

King Billy (8.4) and Aldus (8.3) both read well in Mr Morse’s adjustments for the Auckland Eastermile. Mr G. G. Stead left for England via Sydney on Wednesday Inst. MerriwM (Merriwee Bubbles), whose first appearance over sticks was at Napier Park, has changed hands, Mr F, Douglas being the purchaser from Mr E. J. Watt. Price. £2OO.

Pink ’Un is now quartered at Eiocarlon. Tho crack sprinter has lightened a lot as a result of frequent racing. Nightingale, the dam of those two useful sorts The Lark and Polycaste, has boon purchased by Mr G. F. Moore for breeding purposes. F. Jones and A. Ollivor secured a brace of wins each day at Napier Park. iEolus (8.13, Feilding Cup), good horse though he has undoubtedly proved himself to ho up to a mile, has got all he is entitled to in the Feilding Cup, although it must be remembered it is a weak field so far as class is concerned, as evidenced by tho fact that Truce, who won tne Wanganui Cup with 7-1, has 9.0 apportioned for Feilding. The stakes for the two days at Napier Park, amounting to £I2BO, were divided among 26 owners. The principal winners were;—E. J. Watt £290, Hon. J. D. Ormond £215, J. McLaughlin £l4O, E. Martin £110; Paramene One One £65, Jas. Munn £6O, E. Gooseman £6O,- E. Harris £65.

Truce’s mission at Easter I would hazard a guess will be the Great Autumn at Eiccarton.

I consider; with 8.2, on her "Wanganui Cup display, the Grafton maro, who has after several disappointments, borne out Alf. Shearsby’s judgment in recommending her purchase to the Hon. Mr Johnston, roads as well as anything in the big mile and a half race at Christchurch. It is rather remarkable how frequently first day’s winners pay comparatively long prices the second day. Gazoley, in a field of four in the Bennett Stakes, at Napier Park, after winning the Cup from end to end, paid £5 Bs. Douche carried the bulk of public confidence. Gazeley’s success in the Cup was quite unanticipated by the stable I am reliably informed.

Eandicapper Chadwick’s adjustments at Napier Park produced some excellent just squeezed the Martiui-Enfield gelding Pantaloon home by a bare head. A protest was entered against Pantaloon on the ground that his jockey had not weighed in properly. It appears that Jones went on the scales without his bridle, and did not draw tho exact weight, but immediately afterwards left and finishes, and, judging by dividends paid, considerably puzzled punters. Belcher’s patent hurdle, it is said, saved Maui in Second Hurdles at Wanganui, Prosser’s horse hitting fence in front of stand very hard. In the last race at Napier Park Jones turned to the scales with the bridle and was then all right. The protest was dismissed.

Canterbury Jockey Club has invested in a huge water out for taking the sting out of the training tracks when they are in that condition. Some clubs in North Island could do with a similar remedy.
