THE FEDERAL MAIL CONTRACT
Press Association—Copyr'ght. Sydney, March 12. Mr Clarke states he has no hesitation in saying that the mail contract ■will be carried out. There had been difficulties, but advices received showed that these had been overcome, When he left London the financial part of the negotiations had been practically settled, and not until his arrival at Fremantle did he hear there had been a hitch, which had now been satisfactorily disposed of. Mr Clarke reiterates that his mission never had any connection with a guarantee, and all statements to the contrary are absolutely untrue. When the history of the undertaking was ! written people in Australia would find no cause for regret. English shipbuilders had come together to establish a line commensurate with the importance of the Commonwealth. His project had nothing whatever to do with the establishment of a line to Vancouver.
