Marion Sports,
Next Monday. The popularity of the Club’s annual meeting is already _ made manifest by the largo entries rcI lived, and" another success should ho added next Monday to those previously scored. Certainly the Club deserves hearty public support, not only from those resident in immediate locality, but also from all in the district who take au interest in sport and now that the Club has shown how well a meeting can be conducted, the support, no doubt will be liberally accorded. The programme is decidedly attractive and the events are well filled—athletes from all parts of the North Island ‘having entered. The cycling events will be contested by all outside riders and some firstclass racing should bo witnessed. In the horse leaping competitions—always popular events for the publicsome of the best jumpers in the district are taking part and the pony events have attracted a good class of leapers. The preparations to be made tliis year for the convenience of patrons should easily place the Club in the van of country meetings. The grounds and banked cycling track are in splendid condition and nothing will be left undone that could in any way tend to the comfort of tho public or the success of the meeting. That there will be large fields goes without saying and the übiquitous “bookie” being barred, there will doubtless be some very exciting finishes.
Mrs P. Wctton has generously donated a handsome silver howl, suitably inscribed, for points’ prize in the cycling events. In tire evening the usual concert will be held—or, rather unusual—-for the entertainment will surpass anything attempted before. The very best outside talent has been procured,. while a number of lady and gentlemen vocalists of special ability have kindly consented to assist, so that patrons may look fonvard to a real good time. Among those taking part will he that popular reciter—Mr J. G. Swan—whoso inimitable sketches will he of much humour and calculated to provoke hearty laughter, Mr McKenzie Forbes, of Wanganui, who carried off the championship at tho Exhibition, has consented to dance and should be welcomed by Martonians. Miss Patou, of Ashhnrst, and Mr Bell, of Palmerston, will give vocal items. Mr Bert Crozier’s Orchestra will supply a programme o f bright and sparkling selections, all of -which will he new to a Marton audience.
