Public indignation'combined'with M. Clemenceau’s (the French Premier) threat to light Paris with the aid of the military, overawed the strikers.

The city in darkness presented amazing scenes. The Parisians enjoyed the fun until losses, inconveniences and danger became acute. Many -ingenious devices to obtain light , were resorted to. . Steam engines and automobile motors were utilised in the street to generate power, and candles were sold ; like confetti at carnival time. 1 .

The strike caught the companies and the public quite; unprepared.
