At theSjmeeting of the Oroua C.C. yesterday the tender of Mr Maurice O'Connor for the. erection of the Gorge bridge was accepted. The| structure must be finished in eighteen months. An outbreak of measles has occurred at Hawera. Some 150 children .attending the High School aro affected, and that institution has been closed for a fortnight in consequence. Gus Turner, a railway porter, aged 30, fell under a train at tho Wellington railway station last night and was killed, both legs being fractured. Deceased is said to have absented himself from work yesterday without any known reason. - At the meeting of tho Oroua County Council on Friday, Cr H. Morteusen tendered his resignation as Councillor for the Makino riding as he had of his property and would be soon moving from the district. Tho chairman 5 expressed the regret of the Council in losing the assistance of Mr Mortensen. to join the Martou technical classes in dressmaking or millinery arc requested in our advertising coluius to forward their names to tho authorities. , Rain lias fallen in Hokitika for the past two days and is evidently making up for the long period of hue weather which has| boon experi* ouced since Christmas, During the past 24 hours over 7% inches of rain ’nave fallen, which is”the highest on record" for the past 25 years. The lower portions! of the town are flooded. Although many motorists are careful drivers, a certain number bring discredit on the whole fraternity by their criminal recklessness. A few days ago a lady who was driving round Maunder’s corner at Fern Plats narrowly escaped a serious accident; as a motor came round atga groat pace in the opposite direction audjjust shaved tho wheel of her trap. The motor car did not wait to see the result of the meeting, but dashed recklessly on. We are informed by persons who have recently visited that- the feeling against motorists is very bitter, and wo should regret if the thoughtlessness of a few in this country were to cause a similar state of affairs. A singular coincidence is that at tho 1000 yards range in the Continuous Match at Trentham, seven shots, some wag worked a bogus card for Sontag, of Dunedin, who hud not entered, and put bis score at 31, as folk V- 5555345, a rattling good shot had it been correct, and in addition his supposed sightor was put down as a “ hull. ’ ’ Hearing of the yarn, and being congratulated on all sides, Sontag straightway entered for thcunatch, and, strangely enough, made exactly the score his jovial friend attributed to him ; and, what’s more, the value of his individual shots was in the same order as on the bogus card. ,
