SAD FATALITY AT WANGANUI.
Two Ladies Drowned,
Wanganui, Friday. A painful sensation was caused hero to-day by an extremely sad drowning fatality, which occurred in tho Wanganui river, by which two Indies lost their lives. Tho annual picnic of the Upokongaro school was being held at tho favourite grounds at Kaiwhaiko, some ten miles from town. Tho picnicera, tho schoolchildren with parents and friends, went up from Kennedy’s in nn oil launch. Some of tho children wore bathing in tho river, wlrai a young boy named Gicsen got out of his depth. His mother, Mrs C. S. Giesen, who was standing on tho bank close by, jumped in to try and save him. Mrs Giesen, being unable to swim, was soon in difficulties, and Miss Kate Campbell entered tho water to endeavour, to assist her. Strange to say, although, the little boy was saved, both Mrs Giesen and Miss Campbell wore drowned. Mrs Giesen was formerly a resident of Feilding, where tho family of that name is well-known. \ ory great sympathy will bo felt by their many friends at the distressingly sad fatality, Tho bodies of the ladies were subse- . quently recovered.
