Notes on the Meeting
By “Turf.”
The meeting opened in ideal weather, and was fairly well attended, although the totalisator figures showed a shrinkage of over .£IOOO, due no doubt to the largo amount of racing, hardly a week passing but that there are two or four day’s racing. The new secretary, Mr W. Hall, made his debut, and conducted the meeting very creditably. Erstwhile Secretary Moffatt was also present, hut on the retired list. The fields wore small in most instance i. but the racing was decidedly interesting. . Favouritism was divided between Qlennlliu and The Lark in the Stewaras Handicap, but The Lark had the measure of his field half a mile, from home, and won comfortabiy at the finish by acouplo of lengths. _ • The Juvenile Handicap brought out half-a-dozen ‘starters, in which the two favourites —Helen Portland and Gold Crest —fought out an interesting finish, the chestnut son of Gold Beef, nicely handled by C. Jenkins, proving thnwin-’ ner by half a head. The two hurdle races wore “ soft goods ” for both Aqua Bcgia and Maui, who should both bo hard to beat in coming events. The Cup saw the ton final acceptors at the post. Marguerite (607) starting favourite, with Master Delaval next (511). Marguerite lashed out at the post several times, and Apa suffered in conse-v quenco, receiving a kick on the stifle, which made him a bit “ dicky " for the first mile. Prom a fairly good start King Billy made play for about six furlongs, but once Truce got ■ his head in front ho was never again headed. The winner was ridden in a masterly stylo by A. OUivor. , _ A Martqn investor had J3S on Truce on tho machine, netting J 373 ss—a good investment. ICuku was successful in tho Petro Welter, winning very comfortably, making his fifth successive w ; n. This race was started a bit too soon for most of tho public, and consequently tho totalisator suffered, i
