Williams, the New Zealand captain, w on the toss, and decided to bat. The New Zealand team batted for throe hours and five minutes, and their rate of scoring was just a shade over 50 runs per hour. Pago lifted Downes’s first ball clean over the fence, which was the first six of the match. Buns continued to come freely and at 100 Fisher relived Downes. Tucker failed to hold a hot chance from Page off Fisher and at noon the score was 110 for 5 wickets. Runs continued to come freely and at 124 Upham handed the ball to Bennett and Upham went on at Fisher’s end. Tho change was effective, Downes bringing off a nice Catch in the slips off Upham’s first ball, which caused Page’s retisemeut. —137—6—37. Do Trafford followed and almost immediately gave Williams a difficult Chance of stumping him off Upham. With the score steadily mounting Fisher went cu again in place of Bennett and 150 went up after throe hours’ play. Fisher clean bowled Do Trafford at 153. Curwou was also bowled by Fisher.—ls4 — B—o.8—0. Torrens followed and after scoring a boundary lost Branston. —158—9—38. May was last man .in and saw Torrens’ timbers disturbed. —160—10—4.

At luncheon adjournment New Zealand had lost one wicket for 20 — Lawrence (not out) 14, Sale 0.
