In the House of Commons Mr J, Murray MacDonald sought to reduce the strength of the navy by 8000 men on the grounds that two of the next strongest European Powers maintain a force not exceeding 94,000, and the Japanese alliance ought to imply a reduction. Mr Balfour, in a vigorous speech, declared the alliance would be impossible without the maintenance of the full strength. Mr MacDonald’s amendment was witlidrewn and the navy estimates, covering tho vote for mon and women, was agreed to.
