OBITUARY.

Mr Alfred E. Lyons, tho well-known inspector of properties for the N.Z. Loan and Mercantile Co., Ltd., died suddenly at his residence. Church-street, Palmerston North, yesterday afternoon, at three o’clock. The deceased recently came to reside in Palmerston, intending to retire from active commercial pursuits. Mr Lyons was for many years a resident of Hawke’s Bay, where he was manager for Mr Spencer Gollans’ well-known station. In 1886 Mr Lyons became a partner in the firm of Messrs P. B. Jackson and Co., stock auctioneers, and opened and carried on their Palmerston branch for several years. Ho relinquished this position at request of Bank of Now Zealand to take up tho management of tho Mangateratn Kun for tho Bank Globe Assets Co., where he resided for some years. Upon tho sale of a portion of this run ho was offered and accepted tho position of inspector of properties for tho N.Z. Loan and M.A. Co. Mr Lyons was a man of sound judgment, strict integrity, and an admitted authority over the colony in all pastoral matters. Mr Lyons was 63 years of ago. His widow is a'daughter of tho late Mr Alexander MacDonald of Kawariri, Awahuri. In addition ho leaves one son and two daughters to mourn the loss of a i devoted husband and father, and to them 1 wo extend our heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement,
