FARMERS' UNION PICNIC.
The annual picnic of the Palmerston ..branch of the N. 3. Farmers' Union w&3.hel<i yesterday afternoon" 6n; the Bportsgrouud, under very fayoaß&bla weather conditions. The iitfren'daDee, although not eo large as expected,* was very cred.table, and ■was comprised chiefly of farmers with their wive 3 and daughters from pfQund the Palmerston district. An §ar%"" itarp was made with the day's festivities, and an excellent lunch provided "by the ladies was not the least "enjoyable part of the cln-y's pfttiDg. ' One and all entered into the picnic with a spirit of epthusiasni 'Whiob v i3"a6 marked at piqnios given by the Union in different localities. Captain Hewitt, the looal obairman, in a short address, referred to the vast amount of gocd now being accomplished by the united efforts 01 tarrpara through their Union jn valgus parts'bit the colony. lie contended that gatherings of this Character had a tendency to create an 'interest in their branches, arid from : a sopial point of view 'there could be nothing more pleasant than Iq meet for a'quiet day's enjoyment. pe apologised for the absenge of (iheir* worthy Colonial President, I'j.r §. J. Wilson, whom thsy would baye been dohgbted to have had with them.
A liberal programme of sports was then gone through.
