THE SLAUGHTERMEN’S STRIKE.
Per Press Association. iJHEiSTOHUKCii, March 2. Mr J. Mackay, assistant-secretary to the Labour Department, and Mr T. W. Stringer, Crown Prosecutor, interviewed the Hon. Hall-Jones this morning on strike matters. Tho charges against the Islington and Belfast hands will ho hoard by tho Arbitration Court on Tuesday next, and the Ashburton strikers will bo before the Court on Wednesday. A meeting of tho Union to-night will elect officers authorised to confer with
employers. Tho position of tho strike is unchangedChristchurch, March 3. A meeting of tho Slaughtermen’s Union was hold last night, but tho result has not boon divulged, while the position as regards the strike is unchanged.
Gislorxe, March 3. A settlement of tho freezing-works trouble was arrived at last nigliy after protracted conferences lasting until later than 11 o’clock, and ending in thg accepr tance of tho offer made by tho employers submitted in writing. It was first necessary that the committee should have power to accept or reject, not merely to negotiate. Tho arrangement arrived at is that the slaughtermen start work on Monday morning, both sides agreeing to accent a retrospective award of the Arbitration Court, and in the meantime so that they may bo on no inequality.as compared with the North Island works, they are to receive 23s per 100. Mr W. Townley, tho Mayor, who acted as mediator, has left for the south to-night. Auckland, March 4, A largely-attended meeting of slaughtermen approved “of a log providing for increased pay and betterment of the geiwol conditions of labour. Details will hot bo available until tho log has been submitted to the employers, Invehcahoill, March 4. Steps ha. - o been taken to form a slaughtermen's union for Southland, Dunedin, March 4. Tho hands at Burnside freezing works resumed work this morning. Christchurch, March 4, An inspector of the. S.P.O.A. visited Belfast to-day to watch the methods of the amateur slaughtermen and found the work done was amateurish in oases but satisfactory generally ' and without needless suffering to the animals. Experienced men have been appointed to oversee and instruct now hands where needful.
