A MARTON IMPROVEMENT.
Tho long distance between Marton Junction aud the town is a serious inconvenience to residents aud the .travelling public, aud it is also questionable‘whether the coaching and carrying services make as much profit as they would by running a shorter distance. It is, of course, too late to make any efforts to get the railway station removed to the position in Wellington road where it should have been placed. The next best thing to do is to ensure ready, quicker and easier transit of passengers and transport of goods in and out, and the Mayor, Mr Siceiy, informs us that ho has made calculations and obtained information which show that the benefit can be obtained by means which will also become a source of profit to the Corporation. He states that a railway from Marton Junction to a site near the bowling green can bo constructed and equipped with engines and rolling stock at a cost not exceeding £6OOO. Tho receipts, from throe sources only, are estimated at £BOO per annum, while the whole amount to be provided for interest and working expenses would not exceed £705. The receipts' ffdm other than tho three sources estimated by th” Mayor would, at a low estimate, be .' 1 least £BOO. This is allowing for very _:ueh reduced rates for conveyance of passengers and goods, so that on the face of it, there seems every reason for the ratepayers to sanction tho necessary borrowing. Tho estimate of profit of course does not take into account any benefit to the town itself, Which would, of course, be great, aud bo felt by all! ratepayers,
