SCENE AT A DENTIST’S.
i An amusing story was told to the Eastbourne magistrates by Mr A. E, Newbery, a den’al surgeon, of Central Buildings, Seaside Road. ’’ The witness said that during the night he heard a noise downstairs. He immediately got up, went to the sitting room and struck a match. By , the light. thus obtained he_ saw a burglar with a chopper in his hand standing opposite to him. The witness asked the man what he wanted and whether he had come to him professionally. (Laughter.) “ All right, guv’n’r,” replied the burglar. “ I’ve not slept anywhere for three nights. I’m looking for work — laughter—and I’m hungry.” The witness thought discretion was the better part of valour, and so he offered to give the man food._ He then went upstairs and got a light, and when ho returned he found the burglar sitting in a chair, waiting for his supper, but still holding his chopper in his hand. The man had his meal and was very quiet, so much so that the witness went upstairs and his wife went down and talked with the burglar. He afterwards showed the burglar out at the front door. Further evidence showed that a
constable, finding an entry had also been made next door, and seeing a light at the dentist’s, inquired i£ Mr Newbery had seen a man about. The circumstances of the burglar’s visit were then described, and in less than a quarter of an hour George Wilson, of uc fixed abode, was brought back for him to identify, he having been arrested on the sea-front at four o’clock ■in the morning. When searched packets of grocery, taken from the kitchen oj the house next dcor to Mr Newbery’s, were found on the accused, who was committed for trial at the quarter sessions.
