LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

Sir, —lu your report of the last Borough Council meeting your report roads as if I wanted tlio Council to make a road from the end of High street to Martou Junction railway station, I must deny that I either wanted or asked for such, as represented in -your report. My question to the Mayor was: “ In tho event of arrangements being made to make a road from the end of High street to the Mar ton Junction railway station, would the Borough Council contribute to it ?” It stands to reason that tlio road could not be connected with High street without a bridge being put across the Tutaeuui stream, half of which is Borough road property at tho connection, and consequently it would only be fair to expect that the Borough should contribute to such, and especially so as tho road in question would be principally used by residents and ratepayers of the Borough and the travelling public In connection with tho same going to and from tlio Martou Junction station. Under the circumstances, Or. Read’s remarks were very uncivil, and certainly not intelligent, as I did not ask or even dream of asking tho Borough Council to make the rood. Prior to the meeting a petition to the Eangitikei County Council was in existence signed by some of the laud owners through whoso properties the road would go. asking for a loan to make the road and agreeing to a special rate for repayment of same. The proposed road- would have tho reverse effect of what Cr. Read made it appear, and would bo used by the Borough at the expense of the few special ratepayers. Besides, it would aid settlement, increase the town business, and consequently enhance Borough property, but not through any act or forethought on Cr. Read’s part.—l am, T. H. BREDIU.

[The impression loft on those present at the Council meeting, as is shown by Cr. Read’s remarks, which would have had no force otherwise, was that Mr Brediu wished • tho Council to contribute to the cost of making a new road. Wo gather that that Mr Brediu merely desires Council to assist in building a bridge. It seems a pity that be did not make this clear at first.]
