Costs on the lowest scale were allowed. The old established firm of C. B. Hoadley and Son, land and estate agents, Napier, was yesterday converted into a private company, the shares offered being considerably over subscribed. Tho members of the now company consist of soma of the moat influential and wealthy settlers of Hawke’s Bay. C. B. Hoadley and H. O. Hoadley have become managing directors. The Feilding Horticultural Society met last evening to arrange details |in connection with tho show to bo held on March Bth. The committee reported that tho special prizes had been allotted. The Society have decided to add other attractions to tho show, such as exhibits of dressmaking, carving, drawing and fanov work. Amongst the judges appointed wore Mesdames Fairfield and Peter Thomson, for produce ; Mr Laird, flowers; Mesdames Richmond and.Cotterill, decorative classes; and Mr Just, Wanganui, general exhibits. Tho Eaugitikoi Gun Club held tho quarterly shoot at Huutervillo yesterday. The principal inanimate bird match was won by H. S. Mercer, who shot off a tie with E. D. Hammond. Tho third place was filled by A. J. Rodgers, who shot seven birds. Tho placed men each received a medal. Tho first sweepstake of seven birds was won by O. E. Gibbons with the maximum number of points, R. Ritchie being second with six birds and J. Gladstone third with five. In the second sweepstake O. E. Gibbons and H. Gage tied with six birds and divided the prizes. Mr A. S. Johnson has given the Club a donation of £2 2s and 10s has been received from Mr Podgors. Marton bowlers went to Wanganui yesterday and played a match against Wanganui, hut the games were unfinished. The most successful rink was that skipped by Mr A. F Sharpe, the other players being Messrs G. Hoidaway, Brocket! and Yfoolley. Mr J. Bell’s team played a close game up to the eleventh head, and tiien Wanganui had all the best of tho play. Tho visitors were delighted with the green, which was in good order. At Marton Court to-day, before Mr R. L. Stanford, S.M., judgment for plaintiff by default went in the cases of E. Read v. O’Donnell, olaim £1 16s 6d, costs ss; W. G. Signal v. O’Donnell, claim £1 14s 3d, costs ss; Halleusteiu Bros. v. J. Lambert, claim £2, costs ss. In a judgment summons case Mogridge & Co., v. O’Donnell, an order was made to pay amount, 18s, forthwith, in default seven days’ imprisonment. Several defended cases were adjourned till next court day.
The Wairarapa Daily times publishes interviews with the Masterton representatives of Levin and Go. and Dalgety and Co. relative to tho price of oats and chaff. Levin and Go. are offering £3 10s for chaff and 2s 6d for good feed oats and getting a poor response. Dalgety and Go. offer the same price for chaff and find that £3 15s is asked. The representative of Dalgety and Go. stated that 2s 9d was asked for Algerian oats locally which could be lauded in Wellington at 2s 83<hl. Both firms, as is not unnatural in buyers, consider that farmers are trusting too much to the reputed shortage in the south and that they forgot the possibility of importation. Some weeks ago a swarm of bees settled in the orderly room of the Eltham Rifle Volunteers, and ever since a battle-:-; yil has been in progress between the r-.nv arrivals and the members of the corps. When meetings arc held at night the bees, attracted by the light, sally forth and attack everyone in tho room, and despite many effort? to evict them with fumigations of sulphur, the bees are still in possession. The members of the corps bear many soars —or rather stings—as a result of the prolonged conflict. Tiie efficacy of a water hose will soon ho tried. ‘The Marton school excursion to Wanganui sea beach yesterday re--1 suited in a most enjoyab'e day’s outing. The weather was beautifully ■ fine, and there was a record gather- ■ ing of parents and school children. Pupils of Upper Tutaenui, Makiri- , kiri and Mount View schools also took part in the excursion. The arrangements were very satisfactory, hut on the return journey a demand ■ was made on a number of adult pas--1 songors for full faros, and this action ■ caused somo adverse comment. When the supply of adult tickets had run out, it was thought that improvised tickets would overcome the difficulty hut this sale proved to be irregular, and instructions were given to collect the balance of the ordinary fare from those who were unfortunate enough to possess such tickets. Just before the train loft Wanganui it was reported that a small boy, named Willie Linton, was missing, and somo anxiety was felt for his safety, as lie had not been seen since lie wont fishing. Miss Linton remained in Wanganui, and fouud her brother had only missed the train at Oastlecliff. The excursion meant a lot of hard work for the teachers and committee, hut their dirties were performed iu a cheerful and highly satisfactory manner. The good behaviouTof the children on the train journey was a commendable feature of the trip. The guard in charge of the traiu was very helpful and obliging, .
