Stock Market. Press Association Christchurch, February 27. At tho Addington live stock market today the effects of.the strike among the s'aughtormen at the freezing works was shown in the considerably reduced entries of fat sheep and fat lambs, especially of the latter, the' lamb pons beina almost empty, and tho prices of the freezers sold being much below the previous week’s rate. There was a fair entry of store sheep, and with improved foed prospects there was a keen demand at higher prices. The supply of fat sheep was only equal to butchers’ requirements, and there Was no change in prices. Fat cattle were firmer in consequence of a smaller yarding. Pigs in all classes were easier, and there was a dull sale for store and dairy cattle. The attendance at tho sale was very largo, many farmers who could not purchase more sheep being present in anticipation of a fall in prices in consequence of the strike. There was a fairly largo entry of store sheep, the sale being later than usual in finishing. All classes sold at an advance of Is 6d to 2s per head on late rates, as the improved feed prospects have enabled farmers who had got rid of their fat lambs and fat owes to stock up again. There was a comparatively small entry of fat lambs, and beyond a few large lines they were mostly in small lots. Competition was chiefly confined to butchers and graziers, and prices for freezers were much lower than the previous week, but there, was an advance in tho prices paid for backward lots. Tegs sold up to 20s Gd, prime freezers 14s 6d to 16s 6d, mediums 12s to . 14s,’and light and unfinished 9s to 11s 6d. There was a moderate yarding of fat sheep, and the butchers were the only buyers. Prices for both ewes and wethers were fully up to tho previous week’s prices. The butchers were able to absorb the whole of the supply. The range of prices was:—Prime wethers 19s to 225, others 15s 9d to ISs Gd, prime ewes 15s to 17a 3d, extra to 21s 6d, medium 12s to 14s Gd, aged 9s to 11s 6d, medium wethers 9s 8d to 13s. The supply of beef, comprising 186 head, was good considering tho dry season, there being some prime steers from tho Peninsula. There was a firmer tone in the market in consequence of the smaller numbers offered. Steers brought £5 12s 6d to £ll, heifers £4 17s Gd to £7 17s 6d, cows £4 7s 6d to £7 2s Gd, equal to 21s to 23s for prime and 18a to 20s for medium per lOOlbs ; veal calves sold at 5s to £3 4s, according to size and quality. A small mixed entry of store cattle mot with a poor demand, the only sale of any consequence being 31 three-year steers at £3 13s 6d. There was a dragging sale for dairy cows, aged sorts being unsaleable. Tho prices ranged from £3 8s to £7 ss. There was a large yarding of pigs, and all classes were easier, especially stores, for which there is a shortage of food,, Baooners made 35s to 50a, equal to 4-ld to Ltd per lb,'porkers 27s 6d to 355, equal to 41d per lb, large store 20s to 26a Gd, medium 13s Gd to 18s 6d, and weaners Ss to 12s.
