MR A.R. MAYO’S AORANGI NURSERY.

This well known nursery has become the admired model of the amateur gardeners of the Fei filing district, because here, not only are the chief products of garden and orchard grown scientifically and of first-class quality, but also economically. The area of garden is 13 acres, and it would be safe to say that in no similar area in the Feildiug district is there so much valuable produce raised. Certainly, the laud to begin with, was of excellent quality, hut Mr Mayo’s success has been largely due to the scientific manner in which the land has been drained and sheltered, and above all by the constant and practical care of the owner. That Mr Mayo understands the culture of flowers may be judged by those which adorn the homestead, and similar good taste and skill in floriculture is evidenced by one of his gardeners, whose cottage stands in the grounds, but it is chiefly to the cultivation of fruit, vegetables, decorative and shelter trees, that Mr Mayo gives his attention. The variety and excellence of these can only be appreciated, by a personal visit. While not a few farmers and others experience much disappointment at the failure of their apple trees to produce good and clean fruit, here the trees are loaded, and some trees are Weighted to the ground by their produce. Among the variety of products tomatoes are noteworthy for the profusion of the crop. About four tons of peaches alone were sold off the land last year and a very large number of young trees of all kinds. Four men are constantly engaged and more at busy times. •
