High Commissioner’s Report. Pei' Press Association. w Ellington, t ebruary 25. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, 23rd inst: , The mutton market is depressed and there is a dull sale for all qualities. The tendency of the market seems to be to decline. Current quotationsCanterfoury 4jd and. 4d, and North, Island 4sd to 3jd per lb for light and heavy weights respectively. ‘ The lamb market is weak, btocka on hand are heavy and widely distributed among agents who are pushing sales, so a further drop in prices seems imminent. Australian lamb is of very mixed quality. Hew Zealand is quoted at s|d to 5d and Australian at 4ld to 4d per lb. The beef market is quiet, though there is a better demand. Hew Zealand hindquarters are quoted at 3§d and fores at aid per lb. . The butter market is very depressed, but a fair demand continues owing to reports concerning the dry season and in anticipation of small supplies coming forward from New Zealand later on in the season. The market may, however, improve. Choice Hew Zealand butter is quoted at 995, Australian 975, Argentine 98s and Danish 11s per cwt. The cheese market is very firm. There is a general and active demand for Hew Zealand makes at per cwt The hemp mail,-t is quiet aud little business is doing, but a good feeling prevails. There has been a decline owing to heavy arrivals. Good fair grade, on spot, is worth £3B, and fair current Manila £4O. There is scarcely any demand for cocksfoot seed, and it is quiet at 48s per cwt. for 171 b, cleaned dressed seed. The wool market is firm, current quotations for Bradford tops are Sjp’s (low crossbreds) Is 4dJ, 40’s (low cross-breds) Is s£d, 44’s (medium crossbreds) Is Gd, 50’s (halfbreds) Is lOd, sG’s (quarter-brcds) 2s, 60’s (Merinos) "2s 3d per lb.
Stock Report. Messrs Abraham and ■Williams, Ltd,, report having held their monthly sale at Maugaweka on Saturday. There was an unusually heavy yarding of both sheep and cattle, 'every pen being full. All classes of sheep excepting aged owes met with a ready sale under the hammer. Cattle; Although there were some very good lines of fresh young steers and bullocks, there was iiot very spirited bidding. Most of the lines, however, changed hands year steers £3 7s 6d to £3 10s, 3 year steers £4 10s, dairy heifers 33s Cd, empty cows £2 2s Gd, forward caws £3 10s, fat cows £4 to £4 10s. Sheep: Good lambs Os to 10s 3d, small 3s to 7s 3d, 3 tooth wethers 14s 3d to 14s !)d, s.m. ewes 13s 4d to 13s, aged ewes 5s to Gs 9d, 3 tooth to f.m. ewes 14s Gd to IGs, fat sheep 14s Gd, 2 tooth Romney rams 3}£gus.
