BURGLARY AT MARTON.

Mr J. McEldowney’s Shop Entered. A daring burglary was committed at Martou at an early hour this morning, when Mr J. McEldowney_s well-known promises were_ entered, and goods to the value of £SO, so fax as. can ho ascertained at preSGiit, wore stolen. The burglars gamed admission through the top storey window at the back of the building and they requisitioned a ladder from Martou Park now being used by tho Fire Brigade on the western side. The dressmaking room was first entered. The door leading into tho main building was locked, but was forced open, giving free acces to the main shop. The burglars at once made their way to the gentlemen a clothing department and got on to tho ground floor by sliding down the pillars from the gallery. The whole shop was ransacked, and the thieves wore careful in their selection of goods. They got away with several boxes of silk handkerchiefs, yarned at £ls, a largo number of shirts ot all kinds, trousers, boxes of stnds and links, two pairs of boots, and a full box of black mufflers, besides many other miscellaneous articles. These goods were taken out at the hack door, which was opened from the inside. It is believed the burglars wore disturbed, because a large parcel of goods, including shirts and all the Panama hats that could ho found, were left near the entrance ready for removal. It is thought that the burglars then made their escape through the front entrance, as tho door was open when Mr McEldowucy arrived at the shop at 8 o’clock this morning. In making their descent to the ground floor tho burglars smashed the shop fittings and did other damage. The police are making exhaustive enquiries. * There is nothing to show that the strong room had been tampered with.
