Melbouhitb, February 21 In reply to quesh'ons, the Post-master-General informed tho House that ho had received a cable from the Agent-General in London, stating that Mr Beardmore had withdrawn from tho directorate of the mail syndicate, but his firm remained in it. The Postmaster-General saw Mr Clark, agent of the syndicate, who stated that his mission in Australia is not to try to alter the condition of the contract. Ho is looking into tho question of ship-building generally, and would afford tho Government some interesting information in relation to the mail contract. Mblbouenb, February 22. Mr Clark states that his wisit is not associated with tho mail contract, but to make himself acquainted with the export trade, to establish agencies, and to make arrangements for berthing and stevedoring. His firm is perfectly satisfied with the terms of the contract. Mr Esplin, head of a well-known firm of naval architects, who accompanies Mr Clark, will interview the Minister of Defence with reference to the construction of torpedo boats and destroyers.
