SPORTING.

Woodviib feting.

First Day

The popular Woodville Jockey Club was extremely unfortunate for the opening day of the autumn fixture yesterday. Heavy rain fell all the morning, but the Club decided on no postponement, thus studying homeowners and the large aumb©r of visitors who put in an appearance. So far as fields were concerned, tho meeting started very auspiciously, for of the 18 on the card for tho Maiden Plate there were no withdrawals, Tho field included Mr T. H. Lowry’s well-bred Lady Nell (Birkenhead— Lady Helen), but the Woodville-trained Eoutine was preferred by investors; in which they showed bad judgment, for the Hawke’s Bay mare won very comfortably from another hailing from that district in Pluck; by Merriwee. Barely is such a hurdle race seen nowadays in New Zealand as Fretwork’s, as it can be very appropriately termed. He practically won from end to end, and at the finish there was only a chain short ef a distance between him and the rest of the field. . There were eight withdrawals from Whariti Hack, leaving six to face the starter. The St. Hippomare, Houyhnhnm, who has not been led in a winner for some time, won comfortably at the finish. Her success was anticipated, she being a decided favourite. Polyanthus and Barca were _ the _ withdrawals from the Cup, thus leaving six contestants. Mr Henry’s adjustments had evidently puzzled backers. Nothing seemed to be specially selected by them, and when the machine closed, Arc Light, Assayer and Montigo were entrusted with nearly the same confidence. Montigo eventually prevailed in a similar manner to that in which he usually scores. Most of the journey he was kept behind his field, but asserted himself in a most emphatic manner at tho business end. Tho County Hack was run in heavy rain. Noticeable in this event was the good beginning obtained by Mr O’Connor, and the slashing finish between a very warm favourite in Chicane and the Foxton owned AVaicola, in which the latter in a punishing set to, got homo by tho shortest of heads. For the President’s Handicap, Eosegrovo and Chatterer wore sent out almost equal favourites, but both had to succumb to Wellington owned Landwern, who outstayed osegrove _ h The Victoria Hack saw a good finish between tho favourite, Mahoe, an Sandix, in which the former prevailed by half a length. Sunbonnet had no trouble in defeating his throe opponents in the last race, a five furlong flutter. The management, despite the very unfavourable conditions existing, was excellent. The totalisator figures, as might be expected, showed a big falling off compared with corresponding day last year. The sum of .£5861 was put through machine as against £6912, being £1251 less.

Maiden Plate, of 50 sovs; six furlongs. 118 T. H. Lowry’s Lady Nell, 8.1, by Birkenhead—Lady Helen (F.

Lord Ullin showed the way over the first fence, but at the second fence fell back, some obstacle bringing Aorangi to grief. Fretwork came past the stand v»ith a big lead, which he gradually increased, making an exhibition of the rest of the field, winning pulling up by alittie short of a distance. There was a great set to for second place. Westward beating Lord Ullin by a head, thus giving some little compensation for the runaway. Time, 3min 32 l-sseo. Div, £2 11s.

Dnlcinea_ as usual caused her backers some anxiety -by her misbehaviour at the post. She however got well away and with Eobin Link led the field on to the homo bond where the sixtette were all close together. Turning into the straight Houyhnhnm camo through and was first challenged by Lomaria who failed to see it out. Eeid’s mount won comfortably by a length and a half. Going on to the home bend, Are Light lost her position, leaving Eoyal Blue in front. As they swept round the home bend, Montigo and Ito improved their positions, the latter being in front as beads were turned for home, Eoyal Blue having retired. At the distance, Probable had Ito in trouble. Montigo, however, had yet to be reckoned with, and, putting in one of his customary late runs, he quickly mowed down all opposition, winning comfortably by a little better than a length, same distance between second and third. Time, 2min 13 3-Ssec. Divs, £3 13s and £1 6s

Strathfilian and Chicane were first to appear prominent after a dead all in line despatch. Chicane bold command as they swept round the bend. Chicane continued to show way down straight. At the distance “Waicola moved up and ranging alongside Chicane a slashing finish took place. A stride or two from the post Chicane had slightly the best of it,- but Waicola just snatched a head victory on the post. Time, Imin 19 3-ssecs. Divi-dends-£5 18s and 13s. Chatterer and Eosegrove were quickest away, and these two continued in the lead on to the home bend. As they came on, the whole field was bunched except Eoseal. When fairly in the straight Eosegrove drew out, and at the distance, with Cameron sitting still, it looked all over. Landwern, however, put in a fast late run, and, running on when Eosegrove was stopping, won by a clear length Time, Imin. 34sec. Div., =£o 9s. Yjcxoeia Hack Handicap of 50 sovs, One mile.
