21/ “ rISI 3O '" rj!HB BEST TIME-KEEPER YOU EVER CARRIED from GL SHO RT, “ OHEAPSIDE," FSILDIIG. AN ESCAPE FROM SIBERIA. A St. Petersburg correspondent writes : —Gershuni, one of the five Schlusseburg prisoners recently transferred to a Siberian prison, ha a es caped successfully from Siberia trough Japan, and is now safe in America. He was arrested in February, 1904, as the chief organizer of the “ Fighting Organization ” of the Revolutionary Socialist Party. Gershuni’s escape was accomplished by no more romantic means than a basket of cabbages. The exiles had noticed that a barrel containing cabbages for the prisoners was periodically brought into the prison by one of the warders, and that this warder, when he came to fetch back the halfemptied barrel, neglected to plunge his sword into it, according to the custom usual when removing such articles from the prison. On one occasion, when the barrel of cabbages was| brought to the prison and received, as usual, by the prisoners themselves, the latter hastily emptied it of its contents, pierced a small airhole in the bottom, and then seated ! Gershuni in the barrel, placing a large, flat frying-pan over his head in case it should by some chance occur to the warder to plunge his sword in. j At the top they fixed several layers of cabbages. In this condition the barrel was removed from the prison and placed in the prison-inspector's stable, where the prisoner spent ten hours of semi-suffocation. The day before several ' planks had been loosened in the walls of the stable, ‘ through which Gershuni, having emerged from the barrel (as he laughingly observed “ like Venus emerging from the foam ”), was enabled to make his escape with the aid of a convict, who accompanied him. Two versts away they found a vehicle waiting and drove away. On the road Gershuni shaved off his beard, and changed his clothes for those of a peasant. The vehicle carried them as far as the station called Manchuria, whence they proceeded to Vladivostok. Their passage to Japan by steamer had already been prepared, and so they reached America. The escape of Gershuni so terrified the prison inspector that it was not reported for two days. Kiietjmatio Pains Relieved-.
