Commander Shackleton, who will be in command of tho British Antarctic expedition, is leaving in October for New Zealand. He will land a party at the winter quarters of the Discovery and will return to Lyttelton next year to pick up the explorers. While the expedition hopes to land a party at Mount Melbourne to try to reach the Magnetic Pole, its main object will be to pursue sledging discoveries, to create a new farthest south record, and to reach the geographical South Pole. It is intended to use a motor car suitable for journeys on the ice.
