EXHUMATION OF A BODY.
Masterton, February 11
In December Miss Victoria Howell, second daughter of Captain John Howell, of Pairlight station, Lake, Wakatipu, and sister of Mr It. E. Howell, a well-known auctioneer and land-agent of Masterton, was seized with a complaint that was at first supposed to be influenza. The efforts to allay sickness were unavailing, and Dr Dawson was at last assured tbat the patient was suffering from a growth m tho stomach. Miss Howell died on January 23rd. No autopsy was hold. Shortly after her burial her brother iu Masterton ascertained that deceased left a will devising all her interest in property in Masterton and bequeathing her personal estate to a Miss Hall, with whom tdio had conducted a nursing homo in Masterton for some time. Miss Hall and deceased had made mutual devises of tho property concerned (each having a half interest). Mr B. J. Dolan, [solicitor, of Bunny and Dolan, Masterton, acting on behalf Of tho next of kin, communicated with the authoritiosrecently, forwarding an application to tho Colonial Secretary for exhumation of the body for the purposes of analysis. The request for exhumation has been granted. It is understood that tho authorities are instituting searching inquiries, which may extend beyond Masterton. Tho total value of tho property concerned does not exceed £4OO. Miss Hall was with tho deceased when tho latter was first taken ill, and when Miss Howell was ordered to Castlepoinfc, temporarily abandoned business to accompany her sick partner to tho. seaside, remaining with her until death
