FIRE ON A STEAMER.

Press Association. Wellington, February 12. About 0 o'coek this morning the discovery was made that American coal in a temporary bunker on the steamer Queen Amelia, lying at Taranaki street wharf was on lire. The vessel arrived from New York, via Sydney and Auckland, on Sunday with general cargo. The ship’s company attempted to suppress the outbreak, but their hose was not long enough and the fire brigade was then summoned. The brigade poured a quantity of water on to the burning coal, and, as soon as the cargo has been removed, a" hole will be cut in the bulkhead, so as to allow the' seas of the fire to bo reached. Very little damage has been done to the cargo, which includes a largo number of reels of printing paper.
