FEILDING CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A meeting of tho Feilding Chamber of Commerce was held last night, Mr G. W. Bramwell in the chair. Ha reported that tho required information had been sap. plied to the Council of the Underwriters’ Association in regard to the fire prevention appliances available in connection with the application made for reduction in insurance. It was decided to again urge upon the Borough Council the necessity of removing the sharp corner at the junction of South-street and Awahuri road, it being dangerous to traffic, It was reported that, though no official reply had been received, there was reason to conclude that the petition for the rearrangement of the Oroua electorate had been granted. A letter was received from the Associated Chambers of Commerce, stating that a meeting would be held in Christ—church in the middle of February. It was decided to have placed on the order paper a motion urging the need of a more efficient mail service. It waa suggested that a higher subsidy should be paid to the Vancouver service. In a discussion which took place on the advisability of the alteration in the railway tariff with tho object of aiding New Zealand manufactures, it was stated by Mr Cobbe that there were cloths sold as all wool, both New Zealand and outside the colony, which contained forty per cent of cotton. He said the practice had a tendency to injure the reputation of the country’s woollen goods. He urged that all shoddy goods manufactured in the colony should be branded so as to show the proportion of wool and cotton they contained.
With a view to giving effect to this suggestion Mr Cobbe moved it as a resolution. Mr Spence seconded the motion and it was earned.
It was decided that the postmaster be requested to remove the letter box at the mill, Kimbolion road, to the corner ol Lytton street, Mr Pirani moved that tho attention of the -Borough Council be called to the necessity oi widening McArthur street at its junction with the Square. Mr Spence seconded the motion, which was carried. On the motion of Mr Goodbehere, it wag decided to again complain to the stationmaster o£ the manner in which trains are drawn across Kimbolion road and thug blocking the traffic. It was also decided to draw the attention of the railway authorities to the bad state of the railway crossing. The Chairman stated that he had drawn the attention of the sergeant of police to the Chinese storekeepers keeping their stores open after G o’clock, while European storekeepers had to observe the- law. Tho sergeant had promised to look into the matter. The meeting then adjourned.
