The death occurred yesterday at Christchurch of Mr P. Duncan, of the firm of P. and->D. Duncan, implement makers, aged 68. We regret to have to record the death of Mr Gottfried Nitschke, which occurred at his residence, Cliff road, Marton, yesterday. Deceased was a pioneer settler, having arrived in the colony in 1807, and was a successful farmer. Mr Nitschke was horn at Prittag, Germany, in 1810. The late Mr Nitschke leaves a widow, four sons, six daughters and 32 grandchildren. The contractor, Mr Wheeler, has completed satisfactorily his contracts for forming balance of MangaoneMatarca road and thus established through connection for vehicular traffic from ifuntervillo to To Kapua and on to Mataroa. The Kawekn road has been opened for wheel traffic right up to the last settler (Air A. Cruickshanks). and the wool has been safely carted out.

Every necessary provision lias been made by the committee to render the Feilding Show, which takes place tomorrow and on "Wednesday, more attractive and of greater general interest than the two previous exhibitions. Harvesting is progressing in North Canterbury, and the grain is in prime condition. Threshing returns up to tha present arc very satisfactory, and, considering the season, many results are ar better than was expected. The chief anxiety of farmers is the diminishing prospects of winter feed. Turnips make a poor show, and not a blade of green grass is to be seen either on plain or upland. The drought is becoming serious on tha Peninsula. German Bay Factory has gone down to half the original milk supply, and a further decrease is feared. The percentage of butter fat is very low, the milk being poor. The ratepayers on Turakiua Valley road intend raising a loan for metalling the Makolvau and part of Tnraldaa. Valley roads, but as this cannot bedone iu time for expenditure this season, they have asked llangitikei Council to have balance of the Pnrairi Lake Koad loan (amounting to i’110) and the grant promised by Council, spent on this work at once. The Council lias decided on this course.

Mr Thoms, County road inspector, has taken levels of the cutting on tho Bulls-Grcatford road, just below the Greatford Railway (station. He finds the present grade of the road is about 1 in 13, which is steep for a main road carrying all the traffic from Bulls. Ax grade of .1 in 22 can be made by lowering the cutting and raising the embankment and rc-m chilling tho road at a cost of £l-10.
