THE PREMIER IN THE NORTH

Land Bill to be Cut in TwoPer Press Association Auckland, January 27. The Premier was entertained at luncheon at Pukekohe on Saturday, and then performed the ceremony of unveiling a photograph of the late Premier in the school at Pukekohe, and also a Seddon memorial lamp in the same township yesterday afternoon. Short speeches were made hy Sir Joseph and Mr Massey, M.H.B. In ’answer to a deputation Sir Joseph stated that the Government would contribute towards the cost of replacing roads and bridges damaged by the late floods. . ~ . Last evening the Premier addressed a largely attended public meeting in Auckland, the Mayor presiding. He made a new announcement in regard to the Landßill, saying that next session the endowment proposals would bo brought forward in a separate measure, it being considered that the House would bo able . to come to a judgment on the matter with more ease if the subject were separated from the question of tenures. The other portion of the Bill would also be introduced. Alteration of the tariff would be dealt with in the direction of removing duties from the necessaries of life, and permitting raw' material required to be used for manufactures in the colony to come in free of duty. 'The alterations, generally speaking, would not go upon Finos of extreme protection, but on lines of judiciously building up our industries. There were other m& tters w'hich would probably be dealt with, including the classification and superannuation scheme for old State servants. At the conclusion of his address a vote of thanks to the Premier and an assurance of confidence and goodwill of the people on his departure to England to attend the Imperial Conference, was accorded to Sir Joseph on the motion of Mr J. Evans, vice-chairman of the Chamber of Commerce. Sir Joseph leaves on Monday evening for Sydney, on route to England.
