THE IZARD CASE.

Masteuton, January 19.

Henry Stratton Izard appeared on remand at the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr James, S.M., this morning, to answer to 14 charges of fraudulent breaches of trust aud misappropriation in connection wieli his bankruptcy on an information laid by Mr Channels, Deputy Official Assignee. Mr Dolan (for the Crown) stated that it had been mutually agreed between the Crown and the accused’s counsel that only four charges should be taken, so as to shorten the proceedings. The remaining charges would be formally withdrawn without prejudice. A statement had been handed in by accused, making certain admissions, which would considerably shorten the proceedings. Mr Chennells, cross-examined by Mr Pownall, .said the facts alleged on the ■information were first discovered by witness on bankrupt’s own statement. Accused had not attempted to conceal anything, but offered all assistance. The statement by bankrupt was as follows : “ I have read the four copies of informations laid against me by you and admit all tbe facts alleged against me in those informations, and that I have committed the offences therein respectively charged. The first two charges referred to £28,000, in the Mahupuku estate, handed to Izard for investment, of which accused fraudulently applied £15,976 17s 6d to his own use. The others referred to £1837 received from H. E. Bunny andE. B. Bristowe, Wellington, for investment and a sum of £509 from H. P. Jones, Petone, to pay off a mortgage, all of which money had been misapplied. After some discussion between counsel, the Magistrare granted bail as before—Self in £2OOO and two sureties of £2009. intimating that the case would be dealt with at a special sitting of the Supreme Court before the regular sessions.
